After rehabilitation on both knees and one foot, I have learned that the rules of workouts and competitions have come due for a reckoning. The good news is that swimming and cycling are unaffected, as neither is hard on the joints. Kickboxing and running, however, need a little adaptation. It’s time for orthopedic shoe inserts.Continue reading “Rules Change; Story Moves Forward”

Two Men Go Out For Breakfast…
I kickbox three times a week, in the early morning. In fact, I usually open up the place with the owner/trainer and his son. I like the feeling of upping my energy level (and earning my breakfast). And it’s too hot later on anyway. Every time I come out of the gym, around 6:40 a.m.Continue reading “Two Men Go Out For Breakfast…”
Thank You, Mr. Daoust: Work The Haters And Make A New Box
The final post to review Phil Daoust’s remarkable ode to getting older and better from The Guardian newspaper: Exercise is for you, not the people who hate you for doing it: Everyone has haters. Even Mother Teresa had haters. Some people get their daily jollies giving other people a trunkload of grief; spouting off howContinue reading “Thank You, Mr. Daoust: Work The Haters And Make A New Box”
Rehab Is Done; Normal Lives Again!
Twenty-four physical therapy sessions. The hardest work I’ve ever done. And they’re over. And I am running again. Not hard or fast but at least back to 5K distance. I am also retired from full-time employment, I’ll take both of those as a mark of success. I am looking for part-time work while I buildContinue reading “Rehab Is Done; Normal Lives Again!”
Old Body Parts: The Reality, And Hope For A Drag Show Of A Race
I was only half-kidding when I referred to being tired and having body bits give in and give up on me. I am seeing a neurosurgeon in June. But not so much for something worn out. More like something built up. Just in the wrong place. Calcification on my spine, to be exact. Good, strongContinue reading “Old Body Parts: The Reality, And Hope For A Drag Show Of A Race”
Workouts: Pair, Group, Or Solo Style?
I met up with friends for breakfast yesterday, following a 5K race at a local animal sanctuary. It was good to see them, as the pandemic, work, and (their) kids’ lives had disrupted regular adult contact. The race went well, despite the heat; it started after 9 a.m. The restaurant was crowded but our serverContinue reading “Workouts: Pair, Group, Or Solo Style?”
The End (of the race season) Is In Sight—And Retirement Is Coming!
The final road race of the season is Monday. A 5K with what passes for hills here. I did it last year and was not ready for the elevation meltdown at the end. This year, with additional practice on bridges and my kickboxing routine, I hope to do better. I don’t race during the summerContinue reading “The End (of the race season) Is In Sight—And Retirement Is Coming!”
It’s Perfectly Cold Out There…So Where Is Everyone?
It was 38 degrees outside for my run this morning. Cold by our local standards. Not bad, according to the rest of the country, mostly either brushed or buried in snow, freezing rain, black ice, and/or temperatures with single digits and/or negative values. So where was everyone this morning? I was the only runner outContinue reading “It’s Perfectly Cold Out There…So Where Is Everyone?”
